Interrogating Josephus, Flavian Prophet

Interrogating Josephus, Flavian Prophet Presented by Dr. Cait Mongrain, University of Richmond Upon his capture by Roman troops, the Jewish general Josephus (in)famously prophesied Vespasian's imminent rise to the principate. His account of the war repeatedly and emphatically assures the reader that the Flavian leaders were operating as agents of the Jewish G-d when undertaking their destructive acts. In this talk, we will explore how Josephus pairs acts of Flavian destruction with proof of divine favor and how this pairing of destruction and divinity both shapes and responds to the official Flavian narrative.
