Global Awareness: Navigating Global Differences with Intercultural Intelligence, Half Day Presented by: Melissa W. Hawkins, PhD A Center for Teaching and Learning event Description: UAB welcomes students and scholars from more than 80 countries to our campus each year, adding rich global perspectives to campus experiences. Even when we recognize what a great opportunity this is, however, differences in ways of thinking, being, and communicating among global cultures can occasionally cause misunderstandings, confusion, or even conflict. Because we want to help our international students be successful in their time at UAB, growing in our understanding of how to navigate some of these differences is a great goal. Join us to explore cross-cultural values and communication differences in this engaging half-day workshop to improve your global interactions at UAB with increasing levels of intercultural intelligence. This half day seminar includes content from the following workshops and count towards 3 of the required 10 Global Awareness workshops for the Global Awareness teaching certificate: Understanding the Impact of Cross-cultural ValuesAddressing Student Concerns with Cross-cultural SensitivityCommunicating Across Cultures and Languages *lunch is provided for all participants Please Note: This workshop is designed for current UAB teaching faculty, instructors of record, academic advisors, and other student-facing staff members. Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to attend the CTL LIFT series workshops instead. Total CTL Point Value: 30,000 pts.
