Complex Trauma & Young Children

This event is open to the public, and is appropriate for intermediate level professionals and paraprofessionals working with young children who have experienced complex trauma and their caregivers

This workshop addresses what complex trauma looks like in children and how trauma can change the course of early childhood development. The training also covers treatment targets for young children and caregivers as well as intervention strategies.

This module is a part of the Complex Trauma Training Consortium Master Series (CTTC Training Module #18). This project is supported by National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI) Category II Treatment & Services Adaptation Centers Grant # H79SM085102 awarded to Adelphi University through the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS)*. *Module developed by Megan Prahin, LCSW & Emily Neal, LCSW with support from Jeremy Karpen, LCPC.

Target audience: This intermediate level 1.5 hour workshop is appropriate for professionals and paraprofessionalsworking with young children who have experienced complex trauma and their caregivers.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe the Impact on learning and/or social skills and development for pre-school aged children exposed to early childhood complex trauma.
  2. Explain the importance of addressing relational safety.
  3. Summarize the importance of reflective practice in early childhood work.
  4. Illustrate one example of the use of books, media or play to teach young children.
  5. Define the rationale for engaging caregivers.
